Marketing firms keep unveiling new and creative solutions to make use of 3D technology of their promotions and campaigns; an area which has received notable focus during the past 12 months is 3D Projection Mapping. Just like something out of a crazy fantasy, buildings are now able to be fully transformed as a result of the employment of high-tech 3D projectors.

It’s really something to behold and it may bring about a completely new way for films to get marketed.

Promoting Motion Pictures

Scottish-American news blog, Mashable, put up an article that described 3D projection mapping and its possibilities for the future, but in addition included a few videos that demonstrates this innovative technology.

Firstly, 3D Projection Mapping is a way of mapping 3 dimensional points onto a 2 dimensional plane – this is widely used in graphical engineering. Now, examples of this kind of projection mapping were seen when Ralph Lauren unveiled their new stores or Adidas’ ‘All In’ show in Marseille.

As this technology was applied to advertisements and promoting brands or products, it can definitely (and is, in fact) be applied to promoting motion pictures. Assuming we already know how the technology works (from previous blogs), the same is done in this field with the only difference being promoting films.

Exactly how neat wouldn’t it be to view an animated 3D Spiderman creeping in up the skyscrapers in the Big Apple! Or what about an Inception-style projection exactly where buildings are flipped on to their side, just like from the motion picture?

The beauty, immersiveness and capability of 3D projections to immediately grab a pedestrian’s attention is enough to be the best way to market a new Hollywood (or Bollywood, for that matter) movie. It just has that x-factor thing about it. You just feel like looking at the appealing visuals. Even if you had no interest whatsoever in the movie being promoted, you would just stop and gawk, mouth-wide-opened, at all its splendour.
